Birds are one among the best of the nature’s gift to human kind and it is also a part of ecosystems of our earth.  Birds play a vital role in the ecosystem management.  Birds are responsible for insect control, seed dispersal and pollination, which are more important for the well being of the forests. There are more than 9000 species of birds in the world out of that 1220 species found in the Indian Subcontinent which has diverse topographic, forest types and climatic conditions.  The Coimbatore Forest Division harbours nine endemic bird species out of sixteen found in the Western Ghats, which is one among the biodiversity hotspot.  These endemic bird species found nowhere else in the world.  Owing to diverse vegetation types the Coimbatore Forest Division provides good shelter for many threatened bird species. During 2007 there was a systematic survey was conducted on birds for management purpose in the Coimbatore Forest Division.  This short-term study showed the occurrence of some of the threatened bird species.  The globallay threatened Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Black-and-Orange Flycather, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Grey Junglefowl, Grey-headed Bulbul, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar pied Hornbill and Pale Harrior was recorded in various parts of the forests during the survey in the year 2007.  The Western Ghats endemic birds found in this division are Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Small Sunbird, White-bellied Treepie, Grey-headed Bulbul, Blue winged or Malabar Parakeet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Rufous Babbler and Nilgiri Wood Pigeon was recorded in this division. The Bolampatti and Perianaickenpalayam are two ranges have maximum diversity and richness of the avifauna owing to the different vegetation types. The adjoining area of Siruvani has been declared as Important Bird Area by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).  Coimbatore Forest Division becomes a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.
